MEET THE FORGE & ROASTMASTER
MICHAEL LOTT
Northforge Roasters started with something pretty simple: a genuine love for coffee and a desire to build something of my own.
I've always loved that first cup in the morning—the smell of fresh coffee, that first sip, and knowing you're ready to take on whatever the day throws at you. Eventually, that love for coffee turned into curiosity. I wanted to understand what actually makes a great cup, so I started learning about different origins, roast levels, flavor profiles, and what it takes to bring the best out of every bean.
Then I started roasting.
What began as experimenting with different coffees and roast profiles quickly turned into Northforge Roasters. There were some great batches, some that taught me a few lessons, and plenty of “let's try it again” moments.
But that's part of the fun.
I always told myself when I started-
"If I'm going to put my name on it, I want to be proud of it."
The Coffee Behind the Name
Our original blend, Aurora Fuel, is where Northforge really started taking shape. Made with Colombia, Robusta, and Kenya AA, it's a bold, powerful blend with rich body, bright character, and higher caffeine.
From there, we've continued building coffees for different tastes—from our smooth, lighter-medium Forgehouse, to Trailhead Tarrazu, bold Arctic Black, and our customer-favorite Blueberry Summit.
Every coffee has a reason behind it.
I roast each batch with the goal of bringing out what makes that particular coffee special. I watch the roast, listen for first crack, adjust profiles, and most importantly—I taste it.
If I wouldn't pour myself another cup, we're not done.
Built in Alaska
Northforge Roasters is proudly built here in Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula one roast, one customer, and one bag at a time.
I'm not just the owner. I'm the guy behind the roaster, the one developing the coffees, tasting the batches, packaging the bags, and constantly thinking about what we can create next.
We're still growing. We're still experimenting. And we're definitely not done yet.
At the end of the day, I just want to make coffee people genuinely enjoy and build a brand people are proud to support. And forge something the community loves
I love coffee. I love the process. And I'm damn proud to put Northforge Roasters on every bag that leaves our hands.
Roasted in Alaska. Built from passion. Made for people who love damn good coffee.

AURORA FUEL
The blend that started it all. AURORA FUEL brings together Colombia, Robusta, and Kenya AA to create a powerhouse cup with rich chocolate-like depth, smooth sweetness, bright fruit character, and a bold, lingering finish. The Robusta gives this blend its extra kick and naturally higher caffeine, while Colombia brings balance and sweetness and Kenya AA adds a bright, lively edge.

FORGEHOUSE
FORGEHOUSE is our lighter medium roast Colombian coffee, roasted to highlight the natural character of the bean while keeping the cup smooth and approachable. It’s lighter without being weak—bright, balanced, and packed with Colombian character.

A huge hit with our customers and one of those coffees you’ll find yourself coming back for.

Where Coffee Meets Craft, Time & Experimentation
At Northforge Roasters, we're not interested in making coffee that tastes like everything else on the shelf.
We're constantly experimenting with new origins, roasting profiles, aging techniques, wood, and flavor combinations to discover what happens when we push coffee beyond the ordinary.
Our newest experiments take that philosophy even further with double-aged coffee using American white oak with a medium char, along with an expanding lineup of unique small-batch flavors.
This is where we're testing ideas, taking our time, and developing coffees you won't find anywhere else.
THE DOUBLE-AGED COFFEE EXPERIMENT
Our double-aging process is one of our most ambitious experiments yet.
Instead of simply roasting green coffee and packaging it, we're exploring what happens when the coffee interacts with American white oak twice — once before roasting and again after roasting.
STAGE ONE — GREEN COFFEE AGING:
The process begins with carefully selected green coffee beans.
Before the beans ever reach the roaster, they're placed into American white oak with a medium char and allowed to age over an extended period.
We're studying how the coffee develops as it spends time in the oak environment and how that interaction may complement the bean's natural characteristics.
The coffee is monitored throughout the process, allowing us to track changes in aroma, character, and development.
This first stage can take several weeks to multiple months, depending on the coffee and the profile we're trying to develop.
And then we roast it.
THE ROAST:
After the first aging period, the coffee is roasted specifically with the characteristics of the aged bean in mind.
Roasting transforms the coffee, creating the sugars, oils, aromatics, and compounds responsible for the flavors and aromas we associate with freshly roasted coffee.
But for our experimental process, that's not the end.
It's only the halfway point.
STAGE TWO — POST-ROAST OAK AGING:
After roasting, the coffee is cooled and then returned to the American white oak, medium-char vessel for a second aging period.
This stage lasts up to 2–3 weeks.
Now we're putting the freshly roasted coffee back into the oak and allowing the roasted bean to interact with the wood a second time.
This is where our experiment gets especially interesting.
The coffee has already developed its roasted characteristics, and we're exploring how those characteristics interact with the oak during this second stage.
Over the following weeks, we're looking for additional layers of oak, toasted sugar, caramel, vanilla, spice, depth, and complexity while still allowing the coffee's original origin character to shine through.
The goal isn't simply to make coffee taste like wood.
The goal is to create balance and complexity — bringing together the natural characteristics of the coffee, the roasting process, and the influence of American white oak.
TIME IS PART OF THE RECIPE:
This process cannot be rushed.
From the initial green-bean aging through roasting and the final 2–3 week post-roast aging period, each experimental batch can take weeks to several months to complete.
Every coffee behaves differently.
That's why we're documenting the process, monitoring each batch, tasting along the way, and adjusting our approach as we learn.
Some experiments will become permanent coffees.
Some will become limited releases.
And some will teach us what not to do.
That's the point.
We're experimenting. We're learning. We're pushing coffee forward.
BEYOND THE BEAN:
Our experiments don't stop with oak aging.
We're also developing a growing lineup of unique flavor profiles designed to bring dessert, fruit, and bold culinary inspiration into the cup.
BANANA FOSTER
Inspired by the classic dessert.
We're developing a rich profile built around ripe banana, brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, and warm dessert notes.
Think banana foster after dinner — but in your coffee cup.
BLACKBERRY BRANDY
Dark berry character meets rich, warming depth.
Our Blackberry Brandy experiment combines ripe blackberry notes with a deep, smooth, brandy-inspired character for a bold and unconventional coffee experience.
BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE
One of our experimental flavor profiles that has already made a serious impression.
Sweet blueberry character combined with rich cheesecake-inspired notes creates a coffee that feels more like dessert than your typical morning cup.
WHITE CHOCOLATE
Smooth, creamy sweetness designed to complement the natural roasted character of the coffee without overpowering it.
MOCHA
Classic chocolate and coffee brought together for a rich, familiar profile with the Northforge approach.
FRENCH VANILLA
A smooth, creamy vanilla profile designed for an easy-drinking everyday cup.
AND WE'RE NOT DONE YET.
Banana Foster. Blackberry Brandy. Blueberry Cheesecake. Oak-aged coffee.
Those are just some of the ideas we're working on.
We're constantly experimenting with new combinations, new origins, new aging techniques, and new ways to develop flavor.
Some of our experiments may become permanent Northforge favorites.
Others may only be produced once.
That means when you see a coffee from the Northforge Experimental Series, you're getting something that was developed through trial, testing, patience, and a willingness to do things differently.
SMALL BATCH. SLOW DEVELOPMENT. BIG FLAVOR.
We're not trying to make coffee that tastes like everything else.
We're trying to find out what coffee can become.
Welcome to the Northforge Roasters Experimental Series.
The next batch is already being developed.
what people say about us
Chris Desormeaux
I had the chance to try Aurora Fuel from NorthForge Roasters, and this is a seriously good cup of coffee.
I drip brewed it and tried it black first, and what stood out immediately was how much flavor it had on its own. You get that rich dark chocolate up front, a smooth caramel sweetness, and a subtle hint of berry that gives it a little something different without taking away from that classic coffee flavor.
What really impressed me was the finish. For a medium roast, it has a full-bodied, rich flavor without being bitter or tasting overly roasted. It’s incredibly smooth.
I usually wouldn't hesitate to add cream to a cup of coffee, but Aurora Fuel honestly doesn't need it. There’s enough natural flavor and sweetness here that adding cream almost feels like you’d be covering up what makes it good.
If this is what we can expect from NorthForge Roasters, they’re off to a great start. Aurora Fuel is absolutely a coffee I’d drink again.
